Things to Remember for a Successful Interview:
- Return phone calls quickly. Reporters are nearly always on deadline and a delay may result in the media member finding someone at another university.
- Think about what you want to say and say it in clear, concise language.
- Control the interview. Make sure your answers can be brought back to the main message you want to express.
- Think in terms of “sound bites.” Reporters are looking for quotable material. If you don’t provide it for them, they will make the choice for you.
- Avoid jargon and acronyms. Reporters are not as well versed in your subject as you are. If you see a confused expression, don’t hesitate to ask if they need clarification on a point.
- Don’t dominate the conversation. Reporters are there to ask you questions. Let them do it.
- Never lie to a reporter. Period. It will always come back to bite you and the university.
- Be prepared for tough questions and know how you want to answer them.
- There is no “off the record.” Anything you say can be used in the story.
- Have a question or a concern about an interview? Don’t hesitate to contact one of our public information representatives at (951) UCR-NEWS (827-6397).
